Kudos to VAWA for an excellent and well run Super States tournament! The matches flowed extremely well, results and brackets were problem-free, and from a spectator view – there were no hiccups.
We had the opportunity to see a number of state champions and placers in actions. Special recognition to Neal Richards, a 4X VA state champ and nationally ranked wrestler with nothing left to prove in VA, who came out and let the challengers have a shot. I believe that the champs and placers that made it were ready to put it on the line to challenge themselves – thank you. Those that did not come missed a great opportunity.
Some observation and matches:
120 Gloucester’s Anthony Monahan was dominating winning Super States at 120.
152 Neal Richards went unchallenged
285 Sam Bouis vs. Sebastian Silva – Silva did not disappoint, but if there were ANY doubts about 1A wrestler Sam Bouis, they were answered…..
Others?

Everything went well, but I hope in 2015-16 coaches stress sportsmanship and character strongly. I witnessed at least three incidents that were troubling for an older timer.
1. Kid winning 14-1 does a cart wheel on the mat and then shoots on his opponent. He appeared to be impressed with himself, several people muttered the word "jerk."
2. 3rd/4th place match at 138 or 145. Close score, but top man is up by a couple in the 2nd. Bottom man is fighting to escape but being rode out. With his coach yelling, he looks around at the ref throw his hands up looking for a stall, and then purposely snaps his head back to "head butt" the top man, which he does. It was clearly an intent to hurt the top man. Bottom main is called for a technical violation for reaching up afterwards and pulling on the top man's head gear. The bad sport ended up winning on a take down and I believe gave the other wrestlers the supporters the bird.
3. Brookville wrestler is riding a kid on top in 3rd/4th place match. Begins winding up on cross faces and dropping elbows on the back of his neck. Ref finally got a clue and called the kid on an illegal for the elbows to the back of the head. There is no room for this kind of behavior, someone could have been severely injured.
These are the kinds of wrestlers that karma catches up to. There is no room in wrestling for poor sportsmanship or jerks.
