Here is a quick summary:
Woodberry Forest is an all boys private boarding school located in Orange, VA. It was once a VISAA wrestling powerhouse led by legendary coach Dick Glover. The program won title after title, in addition to being a prep national powerhouse team. In recent years they have fallen behind some of the other Virginia prep schools, but are currently under the new leadership of David Budlong and Robert Lillard.
The wrestling program is a high quality program that stresses character above all else. They have in the recent past recruited and enjoyed nationally competitive wrestlers like Bobby Burg, Duke Pickett, Taylor Reuss, and Jason Luster. Currently they have enjoyed some success in attracting some high quality local wrestlers like Brandon Walker and Jared Engh.
While the program takes a backseat to football, and the academic scheduling makes it tough to go to out-of-state or wrestle on weekends, the new coaching staff has a vision of bringing the program back to prominence. David Budlong is a good leader and Robert Lillard is an excellent mat coach who was once an All-State VA wrestler. Between the two of them, Woodberry is a program to keep an eye on.
So if you are looking for a great boarding school set on a golf course with a well-respected academic environment and quality wrestling program, Woodberry is a great place to be.

The wrestling program takes such a back seat to football that its ridiculous. What was once the powerhouse of private school wrestling is now a afterthought. Schools like St. Chris, Episcopal, and Benedictine clearly put more into their programs and want to win more. It is clear in their coaching, recruiting, and commitment to the sport. I remember the days of Dick Glover and kids wanting to go wrestle at Woodberry, they used to be three deep at every weight class? Now they settle in every sense of the word and struggle to fill out a full roster.

Blame the AD(hemming). If you don't care about a program it dies. My son loved to wrestle and has given up the sport since attending Woodberry. It is a wonderful school that prides itself in many areas but it is a slap in the face to the great Dick Glover the way the wrestling program has been abandoned.

What did Hemming do or not do?
What could he do different?
Glover was one of a kind.

Woodberry's program has fallen off and is certainly not given the attention and focus it needs to be successful. The truth is all the recruiting goes towards football and lacrosse, so the wresting team is left to pick up athletes with a primary focus on another sport. Foster and Maryk left to go to local high schools for wrestling (FHS and EVHS) two top 4a teams, and Brandon Walker, Jared Engh, and Pickett were all locals as well, but they graduated. Woodberry has a good coach (Budlong) who really isn't given a lot to work with, and with their rigorous schedule and small selection of kids who have a primary focus on wrestling, it is hard to have a competitive team. For what it's worth, they work hard and they have always managed to be a decent team simply because of their work ethic.

It looked like they were on the path to revitalizing the program in Dick Glover style, but the commitment was not there. Duke Pickett and Taylor Reuss were the last nationally competitive wrestlers to attend. I think the academic staff is a little anti-athletics in some ways. They do not seem to accommodate the athletes and go out of their way to often make it difficult for them to succeed. Even football has taken some hits.
